How Your Son or Daughter Can Get a Top Grade in A-Level Maths

If they got at least a grade 7 at GCSE, they can get a grade A or A* at A-level

Until Paper 1 (for Edexcel, AQA, and OCR)

I am the founder of Oxford Science and Maths Tutors, a small and friendly tutorial centre in Oxford before the days of covid.

I have been tutoring for over 30 years and have helped hundreds of students improve their maths by 2, 3, or more grades with my proven system to achieve this in as smooth and stress-free a way as possible.

‘...recommended to me by an eminent doctor…’

Oxford Science and Maths Tutors were recommended to me by an eminent doctor who had used them for two of his sons. My daughter was struggling at GCSE level. Although she knew her subjects well she lacked confidence and it was obvious that she would not gain a good grade without help. The tutors were professional understanding, extremely knowledgeable, and very good educators. [...]

My daughter gained A and A* in all her GCSE subjects. She also received help with A level tuition, university applications, and Oxbridge interviews. My daughter is now a qualified Clinical Psychologist to Masters level specialising in Clinical Neurological Psychology and working towards her Phd. This would not have happened had she not received the tuition and confidence they gave her.

My advice: contact them now and take the angst out of your child's education!

Introducing the A-level Maths Cafe

I created the A-level Maths Cafe to help even more students reach those top grades. Members get access to the same tutoring expertise as my regular students but for a fraction of the price of one-to-one tuition.

The Maths Cafe has everything your child needs to master their maths, without stress or confusion

The A-level Maths Cafe is for your child if they

  • are in Year 12 or 13
  • are finding A-level Maths tougher than expected
  • are stressed about exams just a few months away
  • have been underperforming in mock exams or tests
  • work hard but can’t seem to make progress
  • are struggling to understand the concepts
  • feel they get the theory but find it difficult to apply
  • feel unsettled because of changing teachers

Even if they

  • lack confidence
  • feel overwhelmed and stressed
  • have gaps in their knowledge
  • don't have a great memory
  • feel they don’t like online learning
  • have other commitments on their time
  • are reluctant to ask questions
  • didn’t benefit from a previous tutor or programme

The time to take action is now – otherwise things may get worse

'...tutored all three of my children and a number of their friends...'

Zaid has tutored all three of my children and a number of their friends in Maths and Further Maths for A level.

He did an excellent job and they all got A or A* in their exams.

One of Zaid’s core strengths is his ability to simplify complex issues and to find ways to get people to understand the maths not just to learn it. In addition, he helped them with Physics and Chemistry where he also has deep expertise.

He has been amazing, and I would not hesitate to recommend him as a tutor.

'...made the subject much more accessible than my teachers at school had...'

[...] I really struggled at school with Maths, but was determined to take the subject at A-level. I was disappointed when my teacher at school would not put my ‘predicted grade' for Maths at more than a C, as this affected the universities I could apply for.

After this, a few months before my exams, I signed up to small group tutoring sessions with Zaid. He managed to explain the syllabus to us slowly and clearly, and he made the subject much more accessible than my teachers at school had.

I received an A grade for A-level Maths, and in fact I received one of the highest grades in my year. There is absolutely no way I could have achieved this without Zaid’s patient tutoring!

How it Works – Overview

It really is that simple but most students massively overcomplicate it. All they have to do is attend my lessons, follow the personalized plan I make for them, and do the work I set them.

Is it Expensive?

No, not at all! Roughly the price of a cup of coffee a day!

However the potential benefits to your child are huge, ranging from boosting their confidence and self-esteem, to being able to do the university course of their choice, to having access to a wider range of career opportunities.

Some of the skills learned will be useful for other subjects.

‘...he thrived and looked forward to your lessons…’

[...]

In terms of your tutoring of my son, I simply cannot thank you enough. He was really struggling with many issues, having been through the mill at a few quite elite Oxford educational institutions, lost his confidence and most importantly lost his trust in those meant to teach him.

You immediately saw promise in him, tailored your tutorials to his needs, brought back his enthusiasm, he thrived and looked forward to your lessons.

[...]

I regard you as the crucial factor in the return of my son to enjoying and taking advantage of his abilities, abilities that you saw and nurtured right from your first couple of meetings.

I literally cannot thank you enough any help or anything further you need, just let me know Zaid, I mean it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make a plan that’s personalized for my child?

I will send a questionnaire to fill in about where they are with their maths, any problems they may be experiencing, and other commitments they may have. I will then arrange a mutually convenient time for you, I, and your child to talk in depth. This will enable me to devise a programme of study appropriate to their current situation, circumstances and academic ambitions.

How long has this been running?

I have been tutoring over 30 years and have helped hundreds of students – mostly local – achieve top grades in that time (check out some of the testimonials on this page). The A-level Maths Cafe is my new project. I set it up in 2025 to enable me to use my expertise to help more students, over a wider area, for a lower cost.

How do the live lessons work?

There is at least one lesson each week on a Y12 topic, and at least one (usually more) on a Y13 topic. Lessons last between one and two hours. Students normally attend the lessons relevant to them, although all lessons are open to all members. Lessons include explanation of the topic and question practice. They are delivered over Zoom – which is very easy to use – and are interactive, with constant discussion between myself and students.

Can you say more about the videos?

Beginning in March, a number of videos on key topics will be posted for members to access. Each week, more will be posted. Members will be able to pause, rewind and watch these as often as they need to. The videos on each topic will be short and to the point, so students are not having to sit for long periods inundated with peripheral information. With each video there will be questions to try.

Is there a guarantee?

It is impossible to guarantee results as it also depends on how much effort the student puts in. However, you can see from the comments by parents and students that my methods are very effective. You are not tied into a long term commitment. If, in the unlikely event you find it is not working for your child, you can stop at any time.

Isn’t online tuition less effective than face-to-face?

Online has its advantages: you can find good tutors further away if there aren’t any in your area. There’s no need for a student to face bad weather, or spend time and money traveling to and from tutorials. They won’t forget to bring anything and there’s no risk of catching cold or flu from teachers or other students. I do both and I would say, in the majority of cases, online is as good or better. The biggest factor is the quality of the tutor.

What equipment do I need?

A computer with a good internet connection, pen, paper, calculator.

Does my child need to have the camera on?

It’s not compulsory but it’s highly recommended. They will make better progress if they do e.g. it is easier for me to comment on their attempt if they can hold it up to the camera to show me.

Do you offer help with other subjects?

Yes, but not in this way. It can be done through one-to-one tuition, revision courses during school holidays, and online day schools on selected topics at weekends. I have colleagues who are excellent tutors in a number of different subjects.

‘...structured, organised learning followed by practice with past exam papers’

Zaid’s approach to teaching is no nonsense. Sticking strictly to exam content, Zaid cuts the fat out of the syllabus to waste no time with unnecessary waffle.

Lessons were always fool-proof, with structured, organised learning followed by practice with past exam papers.

Zaid created a unique set of rules to follow when tackling exam questions, which no teacher at school could have ever provided me with.
